The Spreading Flame Part 2 - video

ISBN: 1 84030 081 7 In "The Spreading Flame Part 2" we trace the story of the English Bible. From the first efforts of John Wycliffe to the ultimate success of William Tyndale whose New Testament transformed England and whose diligent work in the face of opposition, persecution and ultimate martyrdom laid the foundation for the Bible we have today. Tyndale’s translation came into the hands of men like Thomas Bilney, Hugh Latimer, William Ridley and Thomas Cranmer, all prominent men in the development of the Reformation in England and all of whom preferred to burn rather than bow to error. On this video we meet the first English martyrs William Sawtrey and John Badby and we witness the terrible burnings in London, at Smithfield. We trace the first glimmerings of evangelical light in Scotland and observe how political events paved the way for the man who would change the face of that country forever, John Knox. ‘The Spreading Flame’ will thrill your spirit with the heroism of saints from the past and inspire you to serve Christ Jesus with renewed vigour in the twenty-first century.

The Spreading Flame Part 3 - video

ISBN: 1 84030 114 7 The poet Lord Byron wrote "They never fail who die in a great cause." Nowhere is this truth more evident than in the deaths of the martyrs whose flaming pyres attest to what happens when either nobleman or commoner decides, for conscience sake, to follow the path to a purer faith. The martyrs paid for their struggle in the priceless coinage of their blood and left a legacy which can never be calculated. In part three of "The Spreading Flame" we turn the focus first to Scotland where persecutions and martyrdoms drove many a virtuous man and woman from their homeland. But then, suddenly, a champion appeared! A man prepared to do battle, to take on all comers, to fight till victory was achieved, to heed neither critic nor foe till men and women, freely born, could freely worship as conscience decreed. "John Knox fought the noblest battle ever waged on Scottish soil .. and defeated a more formidable foe than Wallace encountered at Stirling .. or Bruce vanquished at Bannockburn. He broke the firm knit league of conspirators .. plucked from their very teeth the little country of Scotland .. and rescuing it made it one of the lights of the world .. and .. along with England .. a mother of free nations." In Switzerland an equally fierce and courageous battle was fought by another champion - Ulrich Zwingli. Almost single handedly he dragged the tiny Alpine country from the mediaeval darkness of superstition and made it one of the brightest lights of the Reformation. Zwingli paved the way for Calvin. Calvin became the friend and mentor of Knox. Knox transformed Scotland and his message went around the world. The Spreading Flame brings you the vibrant, uplifting story of these great champions of the faith.

The Spreading Flame Part 4 - video

ISBN: 1 84030 128 7 When Ulrich Zwingli stood up in the Holy Shrine of Einsiedeln and told the pilgrims that the money they spent on indulgences was "a foolish waste," it more or less marked the end of his relationship with the church of his fathers. Zwingli was a diligent student of the Bible and it was his faithful proclamation of scriptural truth which did most to bring about reform in Switzerland. His primary object was not the overthrow of the Papacy, although that was indeed the final outcome. His chief aim was the restoration of true religion as he saw it declared in Scripture. Under Zwingli's influence the people came to its fountain of knowledge, and as they did so the truth entered, the heart was cleansed, the understanding was liberated, and the conscience relieved from the burden of mere religious observance. All across the country towns and hamlets came out of darkness as men and women turned to the living lamp of the Word of God. While Zwingli was changing the religious face of Switzerland, in England, the work of reformation was also advancing. In 1525, when King Henry the Eighth, that most colorful of monarchs, wanted to get rid of his first wife in favor of a woman who might possibly bear him a son and heir, a rift with the Church of Rome was inevitable. This predicament over the king's marriage arrangements was to be one of those winds of change that would have more effect on the nation than any of the key players could ever have imagined. It involved the astute religious negotiation of Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, and the wily political maneuverings of Thomas Cromwell, England's most powerful statesmen at the time. When the dust of political and religious reform eventually settled, England was a transformed country. The chains of Papal subservience were broken, the Bible was restored to a place of moral supremacy and the light of truth was beginning to shine throughout the land. Strange .. and wonderful .. how the winds of God's providence blow in favor of the truth.

David Livingstone - Missionary & Explorer (video)

ISBN: 1 84030 088 4 If there is one name that conjures up the boyhood spirit of adventure .. the sense of mystery .. danger .. and discovery that goes with exploring unknown territory .. it must be that of David Livingstone. ‘Dr. Livingstone, I presume,’ the words of Henry Stanley, who went in search of Livingstone, have become part of our common language .. quoted again and again in appropriate circumstances. David Livingstone .. the boy from Blantyre .. whose devotion to the needs of his fellow man has inspired many followers .. deserves a place in history on at least three accounts - as an explorer .. as a missionary doctor .. and as an opponent of slavery. Livingstone was, of course, the first white man to set eyes on Victoria Falls. He named it after his sovereign, the then Queen of England. He traversed Africa many times, crossing desert and swamp, fording river and stream, risking disease and death in the interest of furthering man’s knowledge of the Dark Continent. Once, he almost lost his life to a lion. Livingstone opposed slavery in all its forms. The white, (and black), slave traders hated him and threatened him with death many times. But he continued his campaign undeterred. He never saw the end of slavery but just three weeks after his death the deal to put a stop to one of the most inhumane practises in Africa was signed. But it was as a missionary doctor that he did his greatest work, the work that lay nearest his heart. As a young man he heard the call of God to service in a foreign land. He planned to go to China but the opium wars prevented that and instead, almost on the rebound and because it was an open country, he went to Africa. It’s said of Livingstone that he only ever gained one convert and that even he lapsed. But what Livingstone did was to inspire others, to show them the way, to prove that one man, dedicated to a purpose that is right, could make a difference. David Livingstone made the difference. What a loss for China! What a gain for Africa! 40 MINUTES

John Bunyan: A Pilgrims Progress (video)

ISBN: 1840301295 In this video biography of John Bunyan, Derick Bingham, an avowed Bunyan enthusiast and pastor of Christ's Church in Belfast, Northern Ireland, recounts the tale of Bunyan's life and ministry. Though Bunyan's birth was humble and his upbringing without religion, his impact on Christianity has been beyond calculation. After his service in the English Civil War, he came under the ministry and influence of John Gifford, the pastor of an independent church in Bedford. After the restoration of Charles II, there was no religious tolerance for dissenters like Bunyan. Only clergy and the established church were licensed to preach and since Bunyan was not one of the licensed, he was arrested and imprisoned. He refused, on a matter of principle, to sign the paper that would secure his release, so he remained in Bedford jail for twelve years during which he wrote "The Pilgrim's Progress," "The Holy War," and other books. Even today, over 350 years after they were written, Bunyan's works are widely read by Christians throughout the world.
